Welcome to Illinois Renewable Fuels Association

The Illinois Renewable Fuels Association is a new Association in Illinois formed in July 2009 to help foster the development and growth of the ethanol industry in Illinois through education, promotion, and infrastructure development.  The Illinois Renewable Fuels Association has ten members with a total of 12 plants producing approximately 1 billion gallons of ethanol annually.

 

The Illinois Renewable Fuels Associations works closely with and supports the national ethanol trade  organizations  regarding national legislation, ethanol policy, regulations, and promotional programs.  The IRFA works on Illinois issues regarding air and water permitting, state policy, legislation, research programs, state fuel issues, ethanol infrastructure, education and promotions. The Association and its members are involved in opening new markets both domestic and foreign for DDGS and ethanol.

Illinois' Ethanol Industry

Illinois is the third largest ethanol producing state in the nation with a total ethanol production of 1.6 billion gallons annually.  There are seventeen producing plants operated by 12 companies.  These plants grind over 500 million bushels of corn annually.

Illinois Corn Growers produced over 2 billion bushels of corn in the 2009-2010 production year.  Corn used for ethanol in the United States was only 32% of the total crop and 33% of the bushels used for ethanol was also available for animal feed.
