E85 is the term for motor fuel blends of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. E85 is an alternative fuel as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy and is intended for use in flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs). Besides its superior performance characteristics, ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline; it is a completely renewable, domestic, environmentally friendly fuel that enhances the nation’s economy and energy independence.
The American Lung Association in Illinois (ALAIL) is working to promote the clean air benefits associated with E85 fuel. E85 is a cleaner burning alternative to gasoline that is renewable and offers reduced levels of harmful pollutants. E85 is available at over 200 locations throughout Illinois for use in Flex-Fuel Vehicles. The ALAIL works with its partners to operate an E85 coupon program designed to promote the increased usage and availability of E85 and to provide grant funds to fuel retailers for the development of E85 infrastructure and ethanol blender pumps dispensing mid-level blends of ethanol (E20, E30, etc.)
